Starhub possible downward move

December 30, 2010 Leave a comment

I will be looking to buy some if the setup meets my need. Probably I know myself enough to know I had to buy some with dividend to stop my itchy finger from selling too soon.

A good shorting position for today. After the horrendous downward move, it should be going down following the trend. But how far or will it surprise us?

Yanlord to follow Capitaland?

December 29, 2010 Leave a comment

Capitaland has made a trend reversal. Can Yanlord follow? Volume is a bit pathetic. If it is too high, I will be quite sceptical with more gains. I want to see healthy volume before the spike. Hopefully it will go up soon. Breaking 1.7 is a must!

p.s: my outlook on property sector esp when China throw another hammer and release news on tightening measure on interest rate again. At the opening of this week, I am surprise by the strength of property sector. Capitaland, Yanlord and Kepland and etc is all green.

My rule of thumb is when a bad news hit the market but the sector is so resilience, it is a good time to take a closer look at sector. Most likely, the market has already factor this news in. So when the expected news is out, market will move in the opposite direction. Of cos, this is no simple task but it is especially good at spotting trend reversal.

This is not a simple sector to invest. Since China will continue to tighten fiscal policy, so the upside might not be as high. It is better to play the Warren Buffet way of finding companies with competitive advantage.

Possible breakout of downtrendline with trend reversal (new high make) in play. And one of the strongest China property play

Long term sideway with horizontal and uptrend line supporting. Waiting for resistance to break for uptrend to start. Entry can be using the broken resistance of 3.70 as support.

10,000 hours

December 28, 2010 Leave a comment

How is 10,000 hours related to investment? According to “The Outlier,” this is the amount of hard work required to become extraordinary people. On the average, it will take 5 years to clock that amount of hours. Investment could be in monetary terms or temporal.

Statistically, most of the top 20% performer will draw super-normal salary. This is also aligned with the pare-to principle, where 80% of the money goes to 20% of the people. It is no wonder that the most people are drawing pathetic pay.

I was questioned by someone close what can I do with such a profession, which is Software Engineer. In the end, you are just a virtual factory worker. I couldn’t think of a good counter-argument and restrained myself from going into a argument. If given another chance to answer the question, I would mentioned that starting low is just the beginning, it is how you end the race. My current experience lies in J2EE and this should be the leverage I should use.

It is imperative to find the environment to clock the 10,000 hours of experience. It will be 5 long years of hard work but I’m sure its worth it. From this second, 10,000 hours and counting. Good luck!

Jim Roger on investing

December 26, 2010 1 comment

[From Bigfatpurse]

#1 – Skeptical

Be skeptical of what experts, analysts, journalists, reports, brokers, fund managers, financial advisers, professors, etc, say. He mentioned that 80% of the finance professionals underperform against the market averages. Hence, there is no point in listening to them. An investor must have an independent mind, not get swayed by comments and advice. You must believe in yourself, your research and investment method. You need to go against the crowd to make money.

Transcript: “Because you have to disbelieve everything you hear. You have to figure out for yourself what is right and what is wrong. What is going to make you money? Don’t listen to other people. Don’t listen to me, don’t listen to you, don’t listen to professor, listen to yourself. Well, many studies have shown, over and over again, 80% of the professional investors do not do as well as the market averages. Mainly because they always follow each other, they follow the crowd, instead of willing to go against the crowd. You have be willing to go against the crowd to make money. I say again, all of the studies show, 80% of professional managers do not do as well as the averages do. That is the fact, all over the world, China, Europe, America, everywhere.”

#2 – Curiosity

Be curious enough to do research and find out more about potential investments. To buy low, an investor must find out the discounts before the majority do. Only by doing your own work, you have the confidence to stick to your investments.

Transcript: “The way you make money is to figure out what is going to happen before other people do. You are curious about life, about what’s happening. You go out and ask questions and see what people are doing before other people figure out what people are going to do… What you have to do is you go out to see what people are doing. I have driven across China several times and I see and seen China has turned into a great country. Not even the Chinese know how great your country is going to be. Because you have not driven around your countryside. Most people don’t understand. You go and you see what is happening close to the ground and you will be able to predict the future.  Not always, I make a lot of mistakes but that’s how you make a lot of money. You figure out before other people do. Don’t follow the big money. The big money is always wrong. Don’t try to speculate. Don’t try to manipulate. Figure out before the big money, what’s going to happen and you are going to be very, very rich.”

#3 – Persistent

Every investor makes mistake once in a while. Even Jim Rogers does. But it is important not to stay at it. Continue to be skeptical and curious. It is difficult to not get affected by mainstream thinking and influence. Do your homework and research diligently.

Transcript: “First of all, you have to stay at it. Because you gonna make losses every once in a while. You have to persist in finding out your information. This is not an easy business. You have to figure out things before other people do and that takes a lot of work. You have to be willing to stay at home and work while others are looking around, writing articles about manipulation. You have to figure out things in advance and that is hard.”

StraitsAsia is going down too fast too furious to 2.4 which is my target entry price. However, the downward movement might be able to breach the long term trend line. Look for reversal candles for entry accompanied with high volume.

In the meantime….

[Beforeitsnews] UN Security Council to meet amid Korean tensions The U.S. ambassador to the United Nations said Saturday that the U.N. Security Council will meet Sunday at 1600 GMT on the soaring tensions on the Korean Peninsula, news reports said. Early Saturday, Russia, a permanent council member, requested an emergency meeting which, according to U.S. sources, might have been held as soon Saturday afternoon, AFP said.
